Correlations between thermal environment and egg quality of two layer commercial strains Rev. Bras. Ciênc. Avic.
Pereira,DF; Vitorasso,G; Oliveira,SC; Kakimoto,SK; Togashi,CK; Soares,NM.
Heat stress limits the productivity of laying hens, as reflected by egg production and egg quality. The present study aimed at showing the correlations between egg quality parameters and environmental variables recorded on the day eggs were laid and on the previous days. Birds were housed in battery cages in a commercial poultry house. Main component analyses were used to verify associations between environmental and production variables, and Pearson's linear correlation tests were used to further investigate those associations. Analyses were carried out separately for to layer strains, Dekalb® White and Hy-Line® w36, and the variables egg weight (g), eggshell weight (g), specific gravity (g/cm³) and eggshell percentage (%) were compared with the...

Courantométrie du site d'élevage de salmonides en grande rade de Cherbourg ArchiMer
Merceron, Michel; Gaffet, Jean-dominique.
Current recordings were performed near the middle of the great breakwater of Cherbourg ("Grande Digue", inner side) during two months of the 1993 summer. The data show that, in this site, the currents drive mostly westwards. They are driving eastwards only during the first half of flood. In the tidal cycle, there is only one current slack, at law tide. The most important velocities are observed during the high tides : 0.5 to 0.6 m.s-1• The fish net pens, which are located there, tend to speed up the undemeath currents and, thus, contribute to scatter the farm effluents. The temperature and salinity records are also displayed. _

Effects of crude protein levels on egg quality traits of brown layers raised in two production systems R. Bras. Zootec.
Viana,Eduardo de Faria; Stringhini,José Henrique; Carvalho,Fabyola Barros de; Viana,Débora Macedo Paronetto; Costa,Miliane Alves da.
ABSTRACT The objective of this study was the evaluation of egg quality of 30 to 45-week-old brown layers, raised in cages or on floor, supplemented with amino acids, using the ideal protein concept with levels of 14, 15, 16, and 18% crude protein. A total of 400 birds (Hy-sex Brown) were used, distributed into two breeding systems (conventional cage or floor). The evaluated variables were the yolk relative weight, yolk height, albumen relative weight, albumen height, specific gravity, eggshell thickness, and eggshell weight. Treatments consisted of reduced levels of crude protein and were provided to both groups equally. We adopted a completely randomized design, in a factorial scheme, composed of two breeding systems and four levels of crude protein,...

LAYERS '99, PART I: REFERENCE OF 1999 TABLE EGG LAYER MANAGEMENT IN THE U.S. AgEcon
The National Animal Health Monitoring System (NAHMS) is sponsored by the USDA:APHIS:Veterinary Services (VS). The NAHMS Layers '99 Study was designed to provide information about the nation's layer population for education and research purposes. The USDA's National Agricultural Statistics Service (NASS) collaborated with VS to select a statistically-valid sample from 15 states for Layers '99. The 15-state target population accounted for over three-quarters of the table egg layers in the U.S. as of December 1, 1998. The study was limited to companies with 30,000 or more layers. While the majority of farm sites were contract farms (61.0 percent), the majority of birds were located on company owned farms (72.6 percent), indicating that company owned farms...

New experimental tools for bioassays with whitefly in laboratory PAB
Fanela,Thiago Luis Martins; Baldin,Edson Luiz Lopes; Fujihara,Ricardo Toshio.
The objective of this work was to develop an experimental kit for assessments of repellency, deterrence for oviposition, and insecticidal activity on adults of the whitefly Bemisia tabaci biotype B. The kit, which consisted of arenas and nebulizer, was effective for conducting bioassays, and the application of aqueous extracts by inhaler was adequate. The techniques are simple, cheap, and may contribute to research on this insect.

Production of laying hens in different rearing systems under hot weather Animal Sciences
Araujo Netto, Daniel; Lima, Héder José D'Ávila; Alves, Julia Rodrigues; Morais, Bianca Corrêa de; Rosa, Mauricio Silva; Bittencourt, Tatiana Marques.
The environment is very important for the performance of laying hens; thus, techniques are required to improve production systems, providing better welfare for poultry and consequent increase in the quality of the final product, the egg. This study aimed to evaluate the effects of rearing system, on the floor and in cage, on the performance and egg internal and external quality of laying hens. A total of 320 Hysex Brown laying hens, with 34-43 weeks days of age, was distributed in a completely randomized design, with two treatments, floor and cage, with 10 replicates each. The parameters evaluated were: individual feed intake, egg production per replicate, feed conversion per dozen eggs, egg weight; weight and percentage participation of shell, albumen...

Productive performance of Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) fed at different frequencies and periods with automatic dispenser Arq. Bras. Med. Vet. Zootec.
Sousa,R.M.R.; Agostinho,C.A.; Oliveira,F.A.; Argentim,D.; Novelli,P.K.; Agostinho,S.M.M..
The performance of Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) raised in cages furnished with an automatic dispenser, supplied at different frequencies (once per hour and once every two hours) and periods (daytime, nighttime and both) was evaluated. Eighteen 1.0m³ cages were placed into a 2000m² pond, two meters deep with a 5% water exchange. One hundred and seventy tilapias, with initial weight of 16.0±4.9g, were dispersed into each 1m³ cage and the feed ration was adjusted every 21 days with biometry. Data was collected from March to July (autumn and winter). Significant difference to final weight (P<0.05) among treatments was observed. The increase in feeding frequency improves the productive performance of Nile tilapias in cages and permitted better...
